We usually have lay out every scale so we get either two or three notes per string. Thought these are effective layouts they also create habitual patterns of movement that will limit you in your playing.
This means that, as you get better at playing scale shapes, you simoultaneously become worse at moving your left hand fingers independently. Practicing chromatics will counteract this effect and give you a super flexible fretting hand.
